The 21st century saw an explosion of technology and platforms. They have made it easier to create and distribute videos. There are many different types of video editing.
Different types of video editing
There are different ways to edit video, and each has its pros and cons. Although most editors choose for digital non-linear editing for most projects, and need to understand how each method works. This article provides a brief overview of each method:
The editing examples below are what we call linear or time-line editing, work with the horizontal time axis, often shortening the overall length, as opposed to layer editing, as in Adobe After Effects where you’re dealing with the z-axis, from front to back. The purpose of linear editing is to make a video more interesting more digestible. It is best to eliminate the least flagrant errors and make an interesting short. Editing is a different ball game when it’s shot one-time.
Technically this isn’t video editing, it’s film editing. But this is the first way to edit moving pictures, and this the basis for all video editing.
Traditionally, film is edited by cutting parts of the film and rearranging or discarding them. The process is very straightforward and mechanical. In theory a film can be edited with a pair of scissors and some splitting tape. In fact a splitting machine is the only practical solution. A splicing machine allows the footage of film to be lined up while cutting or splitting.
We can take any source, any format and place it in a time-line. There may be as many different sources as you like, but manage usually 4 or 5. This allows you to collect multiple records of an event and edit them together. But by its very nature, bespoke editing means that it is measurable. There are many types of edit as there are types of event. And the type of edit depends on the amount of film source and the final objective.
One purpose of editing is to reduce the overall duration. You can reduce your recorded 10 hour film to 45 minutes. The technique then selects the bits to leave and the bits to remove.
Film transferred from the analogue is very long. So cutting out the long bits is a priority.
